Staying true to yourself and finding a path that really works for you isn’t always easy in academia.
What your real gifts and talents are and how best to bring them out, is a question that stays relevant over the course of a lifetime. Along the way, you may discover longings, dissatisfactions, blocks or obstacles you didn’t foresee.
You may also find yourself affected by the particular challenges of being an academic, including seemingly endless demands on your time and dynamics of competition, cynicism and status anxiety that generate feelings of anger, disconnection and uncertainty about your place.
It isn’t easy to keep your spark in such conditions, or to remember what drew you to this way of life in the first place.
My approach may work especially well for you if you recognize yourself in these kinds of scenarios:
- What drew you to academic research was the fun of it, and you’ve always felt energized by your work. But now you’re feeling increasingly not in control of where your time and energy goes, locked into performance targets and social expectations that sap your energy.
- You’ve secured a big grant or promotion, and that feels both good and daunting. You want to rise to the occasion, but you worry about not being able to make this into a success.
- You’ve come this far, and you know it is a real achievement. But you’ve been facing loss or illness. And keeping out the personal to press on with work just isn’t an option anymore.
- You still want to grow so much more, professionally, and personally. Yet no one around you seems to need or want you to take that leap. You feel stuck in a rut by the lack of challenge and encouragement.
- You’ve always loved writing, but the further you get in your career, the more it is becoming a struggle. You worry that writing has become your Achilles heel.
- You’ve never wanted to approach your academic life in an overly calculative way, yet lately you’ve been feeling resentful about seeing others’ calculative behaviour rewarded with career advancements. You feel unseen and undervalued, and you wonder what to do now.
- You are someone your colleagues and students can really count on, but you find consistently that you’re not getting around to the solo projects that call out to you. You’ve tried telling yourself that it doesn’t really matter, but it is eating away at you.
Most of the people I work with have a PhD and are employed at a university, or they are working towards a PhD.
You may identify primarily as a researcher, as a teacher or educator, or as a manager/leader.
You may be intending to stay in academia or looking to leave, or you may be unsure.
Here we add a heading
If there’s an academic writing project on your desk for the summer, you may already be bracing yourself. It can be so challenging to find a way to make progress that also feels sustainable and enjoyable.
And of course you really want both.
This 8-week course teaches you to use the intelligence of your body as a key resource for your writing, helping you to meet the ‘pulls’ that make you stop or avoid writing and the ‘pushes’ that make writing feel depleting or punishing.
My intention is that by the end of this course:
- you have made substantial progress with your writing;
- you have become more versatile in finding ways into your writing that aren’t painful or difficult;
- you’re taking pride and pleasure in writing ‘warts and all’, allowing your wounds, fears and limits as well as your strength and potential to contribute vitally to your writing.
About Catelijne
This work has very personal origins for me: from the earliest days of my academic career I grew increasingly familiar with writing blocks and struggles: a constant flickering of I can – I can’t in relation to my writing.
Finding it hard to sustain a research career, I found my groove in teaching and nearly gave up writing for publication altogether. But something pulled me back to still wanting to do more of it. And I knew I wanted a different approach.
My second career as a coach and facilitator opened my eyes to working with the body. I started to translate what I learned from my embodiment teachers to the realm of writing, and this felt like a missing piece falling into place! It has allowed me to keep writing and has helped others reclaim their academic writing practice in ways that have been surprising and empowering.
This is what I want for you, too.

Our story
A Vision Takes Root
O’Leaf began with a simple longing: to find a floral arrangement that felt timeless, serene, and refined. Not too much, not too little – just beautifully present.
Co-founder Olivia (Olief) Everts searched for flowers that could bring lasting beauty to her home and workspace. Yet nowhere could she find what she envisioned: flowers thoughtfully arranged, designed to stay. Guided by her love for interiors and organic design, Olivia immersed herself in Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging.
Much more than placing flowers in a vase, she learned that in this meditative, minimalist practice, flowers, stems, and vessels become part of one harmonious composition – rooted in balance, asymmetry, and space. Under the guidance of a passionate Ikebana master, she realized that flowers could be more than decoration – they could become art. This vision grew into the foundation of O’Leaf.
